How do you become a fighter pilot in the USAF?

Ive always wondered this. Do you just sign up for the airforce and you get randomly selected to be a pilot? Do you have to have a certain intelligence level. Can you request to become a pilot? How does this work.

By the way I know this probably disqualifies me from being a USAF fighter pilot but I have a birth defected hand. The fingers are about half an inch shorter. I can still do everything I could do normally with a normal hand. Could I still get a regular pilots license?

First, you have to get a college degree and graduate near the top of your class (top 10%), preferably in one of the sciences such as engineering, mathematics or physics. You cannot become a commisioned officer without a degree, and nearly all pilots, except some in the Army, are regular officers. You also need to be physically very athletic. Your birth defect should not be much of a problem, but I'd do some research to find out for sure. Ideally, going to one of the military academies means getting a more or less free education, but they only select from the best of the best as far as high school students are concerned. I'm not saying you shouldn't try, but your chances are about like being selected to go to Harvard on a scholarship.

If you go to a civilian college, you still need to graduate near the top of your class. To improve your chances, you might join the ROTC while in college, but it isn't a requirement. When you graduate and you apply to the Air Force (or other branch of service), you have to pass their physical and aptitude requirements also, and you have to score very high on those tests too. If selected, then you apply for Officer Candidate School. Once you go through that, then you can apply for pilot training, but there is no guarantee you will be accepted. Demand for pilots depends on their particular need at the time. Only about 25% of the candidates who are selected to go through flight training actually make it all the way through without washing out. It's not all about being intelligent, a good student, and athletic. It is also about performing under extreme pressure.

Those who graduate flight school and receive their wings get to choose what branch of flying to go into based on their standing within the graduating class. Those at the top get to pick from what is available at the time. Those at the bottom of the class get to pick from what's left over...i.e. they get the least desireable "slots". Most flight school graduates want to go into fighters, so the competetion is really fierce for the available openings. If you make it to fighter school, then you also have to make it through fighter training without washing out. Those who don't make it end up flying something else.

It takes drive, determination, intelligence, and some luck. In other words, you need the "right stuff". For everyone who makes it, thousands of "wannabes" don't. Good luck.

Helicopter private pilot license is a license that permits the holder of the license to act and fly a privately owned aircraft. - The very first step is to ensure that one is healthy enough to fly. It's mandatory for all private pilots to pass the medical examination and hold a medical certificate. The requirements include ability to perceive the colors necessary for a pilot's duty and have minimum 20/40 vision in both the eyes.

- The next step is to get one self enrolled in the good training center. There are thousands of such institutes operating everywhere, but should make a wise selection which has a good faculty.

- Thirdly is to take the training. It all depends on the personal preference of taking these classes. One can opt for twice a week or may be 5 times a week also. But the classes are very expensive. One has to take minimum of 60 hours training under guidance and 10 hours of solo flying. As the instructor is satisfied he endorses the trainee s logbook and allows him to take the practical test with the FAA.

- Practical test includes an oral test where the student has to prove and demonstrate his aeronautical knowledge. This is followed by a field test where the student is required to show their flying skills. Students must undertake the practical test within 60 days of trainer's endorsement.

Bottom line is that aviation is simply thrilling. From the different maneuvers that make one stomach drop to the cool night flies among the lights, nothing can beat it. One can get their private pilot license right away and feel the experiences themselves.
